Summary:

Graphic design for a book series. Creation and conceptualisation of the entire graphic design project, including covers, illustrations, layout and organisation (in collaboration with the author and his two assistants) of all content, as well as overseeing the printing of the covers and other pages of the books, and the spot varnish on the covers.

Samuel Buzaglo is a member of the Technical Council1 of the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC)2. He had written articles, most of which were based on lectures and were provided to me for the production of these two books. He had approached me and asked me to undertake this work independently of the confederation, with all costs borne by the author himself, but the project eventually gained the institutional support of the organisation.

Process and conceptualisation:

The work began at a meeting in his office, where I received some 30 printed articles intended for the creation of a single book, which would eventually become two books, covering a wide variety of subjects (psychology, sociology, etc.), though the majority dealt with topics related to law.

Organisation – Following that first meeting, I analysed all the material, began exploring alternative approaches to the project and, in parallel, sought to develop alternatives; but it was then, at the next meeting, three weeks later with Mr Buzaglo and his assistants, the lawyers Alexandra Machado and Maira Franco Santana, as the ideas generated previously were presented, we realised that the need to split the articles into two volumes, one book contrasting with the other, would ultimately be the most authorial approach, as the articles relating to law formed the basis of the author’s training and professional activity, whilst the others were topics of interest and others stemming from issues that he himself had grappled with in his own field, but which ultimately led to related specialisms (such as psychology, sociology, etc.). So, we divided them into “Controversial Issues in Law” and “The Field of Ideas”, the former conveying the “exalted” idea and the latter presenting his reflections on broader themes, with a more “measured” approach.

Concept – From then on, the difficulty of “conceptually tying together” the project became increasingly straightforward. I sought a visual style that complemented one volume with the next. When generating alternatives (following the double diamond method), we selected the idea that best suited the project, and at the third meeting, I presented the concept, already sketched out on paper; they liked it straight away – a city viewed from above, a texture, as if law and order were being enforced; as for the second book, as if it were something that was sort of in sets of thoughts, something like his own reflections on the world he observes.

Other elements – The remaining graphic elements followed on from these two textures: a city on the cover of book one and a texture of neurons on book two.

By inverting the ‘convention’, where textures are usually used as supporting elements, in this case they became the main elements of each book. I used a river on the city map in volume one, and as if it were a vein in volume two, to highlight the flow, strengthening the connection between the two volumes. I included the scales icon in the first volume, as I strayed too far from the standard layout of a legal text. For the second volume, I consulted the author’s assistants to choose the other icon together; they suggested ‘Rodin’s Thinker’ (a sculpture by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin). As for the colours, complementary colours were chosen to highlight the contrast between the covers: a swimming-pool blue with a brick red for the first book, and a yellow and a bluish purple for the second, all with subtle gradients. The layout was created using the following typefaces for the interior text: Calluna, size 10.5; Frutiger, sizes 16 and 22. The typefaces for the cover: Niveau Grotesk, sizes 21, 32 and 52; and Frutiger, sizes 72 and 108.

Printing – As the author was covering the cost of printing the books himself, given his limited personal budget, I took even greater care and selected the printers I trusted most in Rio de Janeiro, presenting them to the author. We chose the one offering the best price, which resulted in a low-resolution proof of the entire content and a high-resolution proof of the covers only. For this reason, I had to ensure as far as possible that everything would go smoothly. I oversaw the books being fed into the printing press and also visited the company responsible for the finishing work to check the spot varnishes being applied to the covers.
