Summary:
Graphic project of a book collection (two books).
Creation and conceptualization of the whole graphic project, covers, illustrations, layout and organization (together with the author and his two assistants) of all the content and graphic monitoring of the printing of the covers and other pages of the books, and of the varnishes located on the covers.
Samuel Buzaglo is a member of the Technical Council1 of the National Confederation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC)2, wrote articles, which have been mostly from lectures and they have been delivered to me to be make of these two books, he has sought myself and asked to do this work without correlation with the Confederation, all the costs would be spend by himself, but the project has been gaining the institutional support of the entity because of his professional and personal proximity with the President of the CNC, Antonio Oliveira Santos, and with the Economic Counselor of the CNC and Coordinator of the Technical Council, Ernane Galvêas (former Minister of Finance of Brazil (1980-1985) and former President of the Central Bank of Brazil (1968-1974 and 1979-1980)(IN MEMORIAN)).
Process and conceptualisation:
The work has began in a meeting in his office, there, I have received more than 30 printed articles for the creation of a book, which it would to be chaned into two books, the containing has been a wide of variety of subjects (psychology, sociology, etc.), but which of this has been mostly of themes related to the Law.
Organisation – After this first meeting, I have been analysing all the material, I have began to study alternative paths for the project and, in parallel, I have sought to generate ideas. At the following meeting, three weeks later with Mr Buzaglo and his assistants, lawyers Alexandra Machado and Maira Franco Santana, with the ideas had been generated previously, and to be presented at the moment, that we have seen the needed to separate the articles into two volumes, one book has been confronting the other and, at the end, this would to be the most correct path, as the articles have been related to the Law where the basis of the author’s graduation, and the others where the themes of interest and others originating from subjects that he himself had confronted on his own area, but which ones have been going into correlated specificities (such as psychology, as sociology, etc.). Then, we have divided them into “Controversial topics in the Law” and “In the field of ideas”, the first has been giving the “exaltation” idea and the second how if it has been his thoughts disconection topics, with a more “contracted” approach.
Concept – Then, the difficulty of conceptualization the project has been getting simpler and simpler. I have been searching for a complementary visual line from one volume to the other. In the generation of alternatives (following the double diamond method), we have been selecting the idea that could best fit, and in the third meeting, I have been presenting the idea generated previously, on the paper, they have been already liked, a texture of a city seen from above view, as if Samuel Buzaglo wolud be acting on it with the Law and for the second book, as if it has been something that would to be inside of his own brain, something as articles of his reflections with himself about the world that he observes.
Other elements – The others graphics elements have been subsequent to these two textures, a city’s texture on the cover of the book one and a neuron’s texture of the book two. Inverting the “common place”, where the textures are usually used to be a support elements, in this case, they have been as the main elements of each book. I have been using a river in the city map above view, in volume one, and as a vein, in volume two, to attach the connection between them. I have been inserting the balance icon in volume one, because I have scaped from the common layout of the lawyer’s books, then I have been needing to come back, then, the most obvious way. In the second volume, I have seen a debate with the author’s assistants to choose together the other icon, they have suggested the “Rodin’s thinker” (sculpture by the French sculptor, Auguste Rodin). Regarding the colours, complementary colours I have been chosing, seeking to enhance the confrontation between the covers, a swimming pool’s blue with a brick’s red in the first book, and yellow and a bluish purple for the second, all with subtle gradients. The layouts have been simple, with the following typography: Calluna, 10.5 body; Frutiger, 16 and 22 body. The cover typographies: Niveau Grotesk, body 21, 32 and 52; and Frutiger, body 72 and 108.
Printing: As the costs of printing of the books have been of the author’s, I have tried to minimize them as I always do, because it has been a reduced budget for an individual owner, I have been even more careful and made special a selection of the most reliables’ printers in Rio de Janeiro and I have presented to the author the one with the best price and the others. Then I have had to make sure as much as possible that everything would to go fine: I have been following the books to go into the printing machines and also I have gone to the company that done the finishing, to validate the localized varnishes that I have sent on the covers.
